The Branch is very pleased to offer advice taken from a recent copy
of "Labour Research", and believe that if that it will help any
person who feels they maybe being bullied. Although a lot of the information is
"BT Related", members working in other businesses will
find this info useful.
Remember
don't let bully's get the better of you. Contact your branch office
straight away.
Make
it clear to the bully/harasser that you object to their behaviour.
Ask
the bully/harasser to stop what they are doing. You may want to take
a colleague or one of the branch officers with you for moral
support. We can then act as a witness should the need arise. If you
do not feel able to tackle them in this way, then call the Branch
Office and raise the issue with us and ask us to do it on your
behalf.
Keep
a record of the incidents.
This
is important - you will need to recall what has happened to you.
Note the date and time of any incidents, and any witnesses may have
seen what happened.
Report
the bully/harasser to someone in authority.
You
should do this at the earliest possible opportunity, even though you
have made it clear that the behaviour is unacceptable. You may not
be the only person being bullied or harassed and, if employers do
not know what is going on, they cannot deal with the problem. If the
perpetrator is a colleague - go to your boss. If it is your manager,
go to their manager as well as to your Human Resources Manager and
of course us, your union.
If
necessary, seek medical help.
If
what is happening to you is causing stress or ill health, go to your
doctor. Aside from the medical help provided by your doctor, she/he
will also be able to give evidence that you sought their help and
that you were distressed.
Follow
up the complaint.
Whoever
you have reported the problem to should ensure that the complaint is
investigated quickly, treated confidentially and that the
appropriate action is taken. Ask how the investigation will be
carried out and that you should be advised of the outcome. Keep
notes of any meetings you attend.
Discuss
the issue with colleagues.
Often
you will find that you are not the only one being bullied or
harassed. A group complaint may carry more weight, and support from
fellow workers is important in challenging unacceptable behaviour.
