"Disability Champions" 4 officers now fully trained
As part of our on going training to
members, 4 officers of the branch recently attended the Colchester Institute to
become Disability Champions.
The officers will now be able to help with any member of the branch who has a
long term disability problem which may or may not be covered under the DDA
(Disabled Discrimination Act).
Nigel Bailey one of the branch's Committee
said "there is so little known about the act" both by BT and the member, there
is no magic book that BT open every so often and put a person name on the DDA"
Ian Hulstrom added "People think that you
have to be in a wheelchair to be covered by this act, however the simple rule is
if you have an ongoing medical condition that requires either treatment or
medicine then you are covered.
Branch Chairperson Nigel Waymark added "As
a senior officer, cases that can be covered under the DDA take up a large amount
of my working week, I am feel much more confident in approaching members and BT
to offer help on this subject"
